The Turkish Van cat is a loving and gentle soul who enjoys the company of its human companion. They may be a little demanding at times however, it’s simply their way of showing they care for you.
This breed is very active and loves to jump up to high places (get them a cat tree). While being somewhat dependent, just give them a few puzzle or interactive toys while you’re busy and they will amuse themselves.

Turkish Van Cat Facts
- The Turkish Van cat normally has a cute, pink nose however, when it gets agitated or angry, the nose turns to a deep shade of red. FYI: You may want to back away at that moment.
- It’s said this cat loves water but according to actual owners, it may not be 100% true. While Turkish Vans do have a water-repellent coat of fur, this doesn’t necessarily mean they all like water.
- Did you know white cats like the Turkish Van have a possibility of being deaf? According to a research study, 17% to 22% of white cats with non-blue eyes are born deaf. Those with one blue eye raised up to 40% and, if they have two blue eyes, the result is a staggering 65% to 85% chance of being deaf in at least one ear.
- According to Archaeologists, this breed may be one of the oldest on earth, dating back at least 5000 years. Ornaments, drawings, carvings, and jewelry have been found depicting cats like the Van.
- While you may be able to find a Turkish Van in the U.S. today, these cats are in fact, very rare in their home country of Turkey.
- The Turkish Van originated in the mountain regions around Lake Van in Turkey, having lived there for centuries. Sometime between 1100 and 1300 AD, this breed was supposedly brought to Europe by soldiers returning from the crusades. Fast forward to 1955… Laura Lushington, a British photographer, was given two Van cats during her trip to Turkey. After breeding them, she discovered they were purebreds. Wanting to further develop this unique breed, she found more Van cats on subsequent trips in order to help enhance the bloodline. Finally in 1969, she was given full pedigree status.
Physical Features
- Lifespan: Anywhere from 13 to 17 years with some even living a little longer under ideal circumstances.
- Weight: Smaller females weigh around 7 to 10 lbs and husky, mature males run between 10 and 15 lbs. with some up to 20 lbs.
- Body Type: Medium to large sized with a long, stocky frame and muscular build.
- Eye Color: Amber, blue or odd-colored.
- Coat Color: Ordinarily bi-color white coat with red, black, creme, or blue head and tail markings however, there may be spots of color on the coats occasionally.
- Shedding: Relatively normal with heavier seasonal loss during both Spring and Fall.
Personality Traits
- Activity Level: The Turkish van cat can be somewhat energetic and playful. It loves to jump to the higher places and has been known to knock smaller objects off their perches or shelves.
- Breed Intellect: This cat is quite intelligent with the ability to learn new tricks quickly. You should give the Van plenty of puzzle and interactive toys to keep it busy while you’re away.
- Temperament: While being an easygoing kitty, the Turkish Van can be a bit demanding at times but overall, this is a very loving cat as well.
- Attention Needs: Van cats are known for wanting to get their way which usually means give them attention or face the vocal wrath. They are okay entertaining themselves but do love their human.
- Caring Nature: The Turkish Van cat is extremely affectionate and will likely hop up on your lap if invited. It loves spending time with its favorite human and may cuddle with you on the couch or in bed.
- Vocal Tendency: Depending on the situation and their mood, Turkish Vans sweet little meow can be heard around feeding time and when they want your attention or, just to speak their mind.
- Kids Compatible: They can be good with children who are gentle and quiet but younger toddlers definitely need to be supervised.
- Tolerates Pets: These cats seem to do well around other cats and smaller, cat-friendly dogs who aren’t too playful or aggressive.
- Stranger-Friendly: Because the Van only attaches to one or two humans, it may be skittish around other people. It does appear to sense cat lovers and stays away from those who don’t like cats.
Health and Well-Being
Ideal Living Situation
While the Turkish Van cat is very affectionate, this kitty does better with a single person who has time to devote to it. Large active families may be too much and overwhelm this cat as it typically attaches to one or maybe two people.
Possible Health Problems
Turkish Vans are prone to the same conditions as many other felines. Respiratory issues, cancer, diabetes, and dental health are all concerns for this breed. If you notice anything odd in their behavior, you should have a veterinarian check them out as soon as possible.
Annual Vaccinations
There are four core vaccines and one non-core option available for all cats.
The first essential vaccine would be Rabies which is a fatal disease if exposed to it.
The second inoculation (FVRCP) is a combination of the remaining three core vaccines in one. This covers Feline Herpesvirus 1 or FHV-1 which is an upper respiratory infection, Feline Calicivirus or FCV which attacks the upper respiratory tract, and the final is Feline Panleukopenia Virus or FPV (also known as Feline Distemper) which is life threatening and extremely dangerous for young cats and kittens.
You can get the optional non-core vaccine Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV. This is considered a core vaccine for every kitten. Make an appointment with your local vet to discuss and schedule all these vaccinations.
Grooming Routine
When caring for cats, there are four specific areas which need regular attention.
Weekly brushing is the minimum required to keep their fur healthy and shiny. This also helps distribute natural body oils, remove dead hair, and eliminate matted fur.
When the nails are getting a little too sharp and ripping furniture or carpet, it’s time to trim them. Be sure not to trim off too much of each nail as this can cause pain.
Cats are prone to periodontal disease and gingivitus so brushing their teeth with veterinarian-approved toothpaste once or twice a week should suffice. You can also give them dental treats to clean their teeth in between brushing.
Finally, you’ll want to address the ears. While cats have a built-in mechanism for cleansing their inner ear canals, the visible portion of their ears should occasionally be very gently swabbed to remove foreign matter.

Feeding Advice
Cats are known as obligate carnivores or strict meat eaters. Their diets should primarily consist of high protein and a few fats.
While carbohydrates are not usually a part of feline nutrition, scientists have concluded they are able to be used for energy in small amounts. On the other hand, if a cat is continuously fed too many carbs, diabetes can actually develop later in their life.
When choosing a wet or dry food, you need to read the caloric information labels to ensure your cat is being fed the appropriate nutrient levels.
Normally, wet foods should contain around 70% to 80% moisture as cats from past feral generations obtained most of their liquids from the animals they killed and ate.
Proteins are ideal when they’re between 10% and 20% in grain-free wet food. Seafood varieties are typically the highest in protein.
Two of the best dry food formulas on the market would be Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet with High Protein and Orijen Biologically Appropriate Cat Food. These specially made dry food products include healthy amounts of prepared raw meats, some needed fats, and minimal carbohydrates.
Exercise Tips
You should plan to play with your cat at least 15 minutes everyday, although, more is encouraged with certain active breeds.
Feather toys and laser pointers are a great choice to keep them moving. This helps relieve their boredom and reduces the chance for depression as well.
For a really cheap play session, simply buy a ball of string. Cut off a ten foot section at a time and drag it around the house behind you. Your kitties will love attacking the end of the string! Big fun for a small price.
Catnip is another way to offer an edible distraction in their lives. Don’t worry, the effects typically wear off in about 15 minutes or so.
One of the best items you can acquire for exercise would be a cat tree or cat condo. This is basically a jungle gym for cats which provides a place for climbing, relaxing, and sharpening their claws instead of using your furniture.
There are a couple other alternatives including an exercise wheel, which can be somewhat expensive, and a simple body harness with a leash for outdoor walks. Your cat may or may not like this option but, you can give it a try.
Turkish Van Cat Price
You can pickup an unregistered, pet-only Turkish Van kitten for the price of $400 to $800.
For those who choose a registered pedigree with excellent features and possibly even award-winning parents, you can expect to pay $800 to $1500 from a reputable breeder.
You may be able to find a Turkish Van kitty from an adoption center but just know ahead of time you’ll probably be taking home a mixed breed. The service fees are typically $30 to $175.
