This impish looking kitty is far from mischievous but it has its silly moments. Born of the Sphynx, Munchkin, and American Curl, the Dwelf cat is one of the most unique felines in the world.
You will fall in love with this charming little dynamo. Yes it looks like an alien but, the Dwelf has an amazing personality and a playful nature no one can resist.

Dwelf Cat Facts
- Because the Dwelf cat has very little to no hair, people assume this breed is hypoallergenic. That is a myth! NO cat is 100% hypoallergenic. The Fel D 1 protein in cat saliva causes the allergies, not pet dander or fur.
- Keep this little cutie indoors and away from the sun. Dwelfs can actually get a sunburn if not protected with sun block. A sweater in winter is also advised.
- Don’t let the short legs fool you! This playful cat will run, jump, and climb just like any other cat with long legs. It may even surprise you with its uncanny abilities.
- The name Dwelf actually comes from “Dwarf + Elf” thanks to its short stature and pixie-like appearance.
- The Dwelf cat typically feels warm to the touch when you pick it up however, don’t be alarmed, this is normal. It has no fur to insulate and a somewhat higher metabolism rate so, the skin radiates its inner heat.
- This breed was created in the early 2000s using the Sphynx, Munchkin, and American Curl cats. They continue to be developed by various high-end catteries as designer breeds and their prices reflect the limited availability as well.
Physical Features
- Lifespan: Because this cat is relatively new, our estimate is based on the breeds used to help develop the Dwelf, so approximately a 10 to 15 year lifespan.
- Weight: Females typically range from 5 to 7 lbs and the slightly heavier males run about 6 to 8 lbs.
- Body Type: Short and stocky build with a muscular, barrel shaped frame.
- Eye Color: Various colors from blue to green.
- Coat Color: Skin tones from pink to white to cream to black. If there is any velvety hair or peach fuzz, there may be darker spots as well.
- Shedding: Zero. Zilch. Nada.
Personality Traits
- Activity Level: The Dwelf cat is not overly energetic but loves to play and act the fool. On the other hand, its down time is just as important since this equates to snuggling with their human companions whenever possible.
- Breed Intellect: With the ability to sense human emotions and react accordingly, this cat is both intuitive and a problem solver. They also make great therapy cats.
- Temperament: As with some other cats, this kitty has a somewhat dog-like personality which simply means it is friendly, affectionate, and loyal.
- Attention Needs: Being an easy-going feline, you need not worry about the Dwelf as it is not demanding or overbearing. It just wants to be loved.
- Caring Nature: This is a very loving kitty who enjoys lap time and cuddling up with you on the couch or in your bed under the covers.
- Vocal Tendency: Depending on their mood and the situation, this cat may have a few words for you around meal time or when it wants your undivided attention.
- Kids Compatible: The adorable Dwelf likes to be around children and is incredibly tolerant as long as they adhere to proper cat etiquette.
- Tolerates Pets: It gets along well with other cats and smaller cat-friendly dogs.
- Stranger-Friendly: While it may take a few moments to warm up to outside friends and family, don’t be afraid to invite them over as the Dwelf is quite social.

Possible Health Problems
There are three main issues when it comes to the Dwelf…
- Lordosis (inward curvature of the spine)
- Pectus Excavatum (funnel or sunken chest deformity)
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (thickening of the heart muscle walls)
The ears are another concern. When cleaning them, be extremely careful as they are very delicate and can possibly be damaged if you mishandle them.
Their skin has to be cleaned on a daily basis with a wet wipe in order to prevent oily buildup. You will also need to bathe the Dwelf every week or two with a high quality pet shampoo and be sure to dry it thoroughly with a towel (especially between the creases of the skin) to avoid any problems.
Annual Vaccinations
There are four core vaccines and one non-core option available for all cats.
The first essential vaccine would be Rabies which is a fatal disease if exposed to it.
The second inoculation (FVRCP) is a combination of the remaining three core vaccines in one. This covers Feline Herpesvirus 1 or FHV-1 which is an upper respiratory infection, Feline Calicivirus or FCV which attacks the upper respiratory tract, and the final is Feline Panleukopenia Virus or FPV (also known as Feline Distemper) which is life threatening and extremely dangerous for young cats and kittens.
You can get the optional non-core vaccine Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV. This is considered a core vaccine for every kitten. Make an appointment with your local vet to discuss and schedule all these vaccinations.
Grooming Routine
When caring for cats, there are four specific areas which need regular attention.
Weekly brushing is the minimum required to keep their fur healthy and shiny. This also helps distribute natural body oils, remove dead hair, and eliminate matted fur.
When the nails are getting a little too sharp and ripping furniture or carpet, it’s time to trim them. Be sure not to trim off too much of each nail as this can cause pain.
Cats are prone to periodontal disease and gingivitus so brushing their teeth with veterinarian-approved toothpaste once or twice a week should suffice. You can also give them dental treats to clean their teeth in between brushing.
Finally, you’ll want to address the ears. While cats have a built-in mechanism for cleansing their inner ear canals, the visible portion of their ears should occasionally be very gently swabbed to remove foreign matter.
Please consult a veterinarian for the proper procedures when grooming your cat.
Feeding Advice
Cats are known as obligate carnivores or strict meat eaters. Their diets should primarily consist of high protein and a few fats.
While carbohydrates are not usually a part of feline nutrition, scientists have concluded they are able to be used for energy in small amounts. On the other hand, if a cat is continuously fed too many carbs, diabetes can actually develop later in their life.
When choosing a wet or dry food, you need to read the caloric information labels to ensure your cat is being fed the appropriate nutrient levels.
Normally, wet foods should contain around 70% to 80% moisture as cats from past feral generations obtained most of their liquids from the animals they killed and ate.
Proteins are ideal when they’re between 10% and 20% in grain-free wet food. Seafood varieties are typically the highest in protein.
Two of the best dry food formulas on the market would be Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet with High Protein and Orijen Biologically Appropriate Cat Food. These specially made dry food products include healthy amounts of prepared raw meats, some needed fats, and minimal carbohydrates.
Exercise Tips
You should plan to play with your cat at least 15 minutes everyday, although, more is encouraged with certain active breeds.
Feather toys and laser pointers are a great choice to keep them moving. This helps relieve their boredom and reduces the chance for depression as well.
For a really cheap play session, simply buy a ball of string. Cut off a ten foot section at a time and drag it around the house behind you. Your kitties will love attacking the end of the string! Big fun for a small price.
Catnip is another way to offer an edible distraction in their lives. Don’t worry, the effects typically wear off in about 15 minutes or so.
One of the best items you can acquire for exercise would be a cat tree or cat condo. This is basically a jungle gym for cats which provides a place for climbing, relaxing, and sharpening their claws instead of using your furniture.
There are a couple other alternatives including an exercise wheel, which can be somewhat expensive, and a simple body harness with a leash for outdoor walks. Your cat may or may not like this option but, you can give it a try.
Dwelf Cat Price
The Dwelf cat price is quite high from $2500 to $4500 on average from reputable catteries. We’ve even seen them cost up to $8000 from exclusive designer breeders.
Appearance is the prime reason for the higher expense. Purebreds that are completely hairless, have shorter legs, and odd eye color all factor into the exorbitant asking prices.
We highly doubt you’ll find any Dwelf cats in adoption centers but if you do, plan on spending $30 – $175 to take your kitty home. Warning: You will most likely have a mixed breed, not a pedigree.
