If you are not familiar with the Devon Rex cat, they have been compared to alien creatures such as Gremlins or Yoda from Star Wars.
These unique felines have a clown-like personality with their playful antics and curious nature. They also love warm spots and will seek out the comfort of your lap when they have the chance.
This breed absolutely loves being around their humans so, if you’re looking for a loyal cat that will stay by your side, the Devon Rex is definitely the one for you.
Devon Rex Cat Facts
- In 1960, a feral tom with a curly coat was mated to a tortie and white female stray which produced a litter of kittens with one unique brownish-black male. He had the same coat as his father and Miss Beryl Cox, who had adopted the tortie female, kept the first Devon Rex named Kirlee to help develop this new breed.
- The Devon Rex is a seriously talented jumper. Don’t be surprised when you find it on the highest places in your home including on top of doors, believe it or not.
- Seeking out the only warmest spots, the Devon Rex can be found basking in the morning sun, joining you under the covers, enjoying lap time whenever possible, and even resting on floor heat vents during the winter.
- You should never attempt to brush or comb the fur of a Devon Rex. Because they lack the guard hairs, their coat is somewhat fragile and could easily be damaged.
- While not being 100% hypoallergenic, this breed is one of the better choices for those with cat allergies as they produce a low level of the Fel d 1 protein which is actually the cause of allergies, not pet dander.
- Because the coat of the Devon Rex is very thin, this is not a cat to let outside. It can get sunburned during the warmer months and has no protection from the cold weather either. You might consider a sweater for them during cooler months.

- Lifespan: Roughly 12 to 16 years with a possibility of a few more in some cases.
- Weight: Female weigh in at 6-8 lbs with larger males around 8-10 lbs
- Body Type: Small to medium size frame with a slim, athletic build.
- Eye Color: A multitude of various colors.

- Shedding: Average amount with the heaviest times during Fall and Spring.
Personality Traits
- Activity Level: Devon Rexes are relatively energetic but not overly intense. However, they are extremely curious which keeps them constantly searching.
- Breed Intellect: Considered to be very smart, the Devon Rex easily learns new tricks, and is a tremendous problem solver. Puzzle toys are perfect for this cat.
- Temperament: They are known to be a bit of an entertainer, always showing off and acting the fool. This cat is very social, friendly, and outgoing with humans.
- Attention Needs: While this breed loves their human companions and enjoys playtime with them, they are happy to amuse themselves when they’re alone.
- Caring Nature: Being somewhat of a clingy kitty, the Devon Rex will attach to its favorite humans and want to be included in all activities. Some are lap cats and some are not. Opinions vary among owners of these unique felines.
- Vocal Tendency: They can be quite opinionated and willing to voice how they feel. When they want something or need you to understand what’s on their minds, you will certainly hear about it!
- Kids Compatible: Because these cats are incredibly outgoing, they are wonderful with children as long as they treat the kitties right.
- Tolerates Pets: This breed does well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs.
- Stranger-Friendly: Very much! Devons are social felines. They will welcome the attention of your family and friends but, may take a minute to warm up to them.
Health and Well-Being
Ideal Living Situation
The Devon Rex is most comfortable in active household with a large family. You need to commit a lot of time to these kitties as they thrive on the company of their humans. Those who live alone or prefer a quiet lifestyle should look for another breed since this cat is way too active for them. Oh, and no workaholics either!
Possible Health Problems
There are several health issues for the Devon Rex and they are…
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (thickening of the inner heart muscle)
- Hip Dysplasia (hip joint out of alignment)
- Myopathy or Spasticity (Devon Rex specific genetic disorder in kittens)
- Hypotrichosis (loss of hair or balding)
- Ear Wax Buildup (visible areas need to be gently cleaned on a regular basis)
Annual Vaccinations
There are four core vaccines and one non-core option available for all cats.
The first essential vaccine would be Rabies which is a fatal disease if exposed to it.
The second inoculation (FVRCP) is a combination of the remaining three core vaccines in one. This covers Feline Herpesvirus 1 or FHV-1 which is an upper respiratory infection, Feline Calicivirus or FCV which attacks the upper respiratory tract, and the final is Feline Panleukopenia Virus or FPV (also known as Feline Distemper) which is life threatening and extremely dangerous for young cats and kittens.
You can get the optional non-core vaccine Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV. This is considered a core vaccine for every kitten. Make an appointment with your local vet to discuss and schedule all these vaccinations.
Grooming Routine
When caring for cats, there are four specific areas which need regular attention.
Weekly brushing is the minimum required to keep their fur healthy and shiny. This also helps distribute natural body oils, remove dead hair, and eliminate matted fur.
When the nails are getting a little too sharp and ripping furniture or carpet, it’s time to trim them. Be sure not to trim off too much of each nail as this can cause pain.
Cats are prone to periodontal disease and gingivitus so brushing their teeth with veterinarian-approved toothpaste once or twice a week should suffice. You can also give them dental treats to clean their teeth in between brushing.
Finally, you’ll want to address the ears. While cats have a built-in mechanism for cleansing their inner ear canals, the visible portion of their ears should occasionally be very gently swabbed to remove foreign matter.

Feeding Advice
Cats are known as obligate carnivores or strict meat eaters. Their diets should primarily consist of high protein and a few fats.
While carbohydrates are not usually a part of feline nutrition, scientists have concluded they are able to be used for energy in small amounts. On the other hand, if a cat is continuously fed too many carbs, diabetes can actually develop later in their life.
When choosing a wet or dry food, you need to read the caloric information labels to ensure your cat is being fed the appropriate nutrient levels.
Normally, wet foods should contain around 70% to 80% moisture as cats from past feral generations obtained most of their liquids from the animals they killed and ate.
Proteins are ideal when they’re between 10% and 20% in grain-free wet food. Seafood varieties are typically the highest in protein.
Two of the best dry food formulas on the market would be Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet with High Protein and Orijen Biologically Appropriate Cat Food. These specially made dry food products include healthy amounts of prepared raw meats, some needed fats, and minimal carbohydrates.
Exercise Tips
You should plan to play with your cat at least 15 minutes everyday, although, more is encouraged with certain active breeds.
Feather toys and laser pointers are a great choice to keep them moving. This helps relieve their boredom and reduces the chance for depression as well.
For a really cheap play session, simply buy a ball of string. Cut off a ten foot section at a time and drag it around the house behind you. Your kitties will love attacking the end of the string! Big fun for a small price.
Catnip is another way to offer an edible distraction in their lives. Don’t worry, the effects typically wear off in about 15 minutes or so.
One of the best items you can acquire for exercise would be a cat tree or cat condo. This is basically a jungle gym for cats which provides a place for climbing, relaxing, and sharpening their claws instead of using your furniture.
There are a couple other alternatives including an exercise wheel, which can be somewhat expensive, and a simple body harness with a leash for outdoor walks. Your cat may or may not like this option but, you can give it a try.
Devon Rex Cat Price
The Devon Rex cat price will vary widely depending on the breeder, appearance, and, if the parents were show winners.
Devon Rex kittens can cost as low as $800 through smaller breeders and up to around $1700 for show quality potential from well-known catteries.
Highly prized purebreds from champion lineage have been known to sell for as much as $3000.
If you’re lucky enough to locate a Devon Rex cat up for adoption in a shelter, expect to pay between $30 and $175 in standard fees. Unfortunately you will probably be getting a mixed breed as pedigrees are rarely found in these facilities.
