This forever young breed comes in most colors and has curled ears that are absolutely adorable. If you have the time to spend with this active feline, they will surely entertain everyone including family members, friends, and even guests or strangers.
American Curl Cat Facts
- The American Curl has an unusual way of expressing affection. This cat will head butt the people it most cares about which is actually a common behavior known as bunting.
- Dubbed Peter Pan of the cat world because the American Curl continues to play like a kitten well into adulthood. It’s not unheard of to find this breed running around the home and climbing everything, even past 10 years old.
- If you want a cat who is very loyal, the American Curl definitely fits the bill. Once this cat settles in and becomes attached to their human companions, it will actually form a deep emotional bond. Not only that, they have protective instincts quite similar to dogs. If an American Curl senses a threat to their owners, it may indeed react defensively.
- Hygiene is very important to American Curls, to the point of being obsessive-compulsive. Because of this, the cleanliness of the litter box is incredibly important. To keep this cat from going outside the designated area, scoop the cat box on a daily basis.
- American curl cats love heights and climbing. It’s not unusual to find them on top of refrigerators, kitchen cabinets, or high shelving. A tall cat tree will help to divert them.
- This breed is born with straights ears. They will begin to curl up 4 to 5 days after birth but then may somewhat straighten out again. By the time they reach four months of age, the process will end and their ears are curled back anywhere from 90 to 180 degrees.

- Breed Intellect: If curiosity is a sign of intelligence, then these cats top the list. They’re always searching and getting into things so, it’s best to give them plenty of toys to play with. American Curls have been known to open up kitchen cabinets and doors as well. They will also quickly learn all kinds of tricks and love to play fetch just like a dog.
- Temperament: This cat gets along with everyone! Words used to describe them are energetic, loyal, entertaining, playful, friendly, outgoing, warmhearted, and sensitive.
- Attention Needs: Like most domestic cats, this breed loves to spend time with their owners. They will need playtime and do not like being ignored. If you’re really busy and away from the home for extended periods of time, you may want to choose another kitty.
- Caring Nature: The American Curl is not your typical lap cat however, they will follow you around the home and stay close. While these cats won’t normally cuddle with you, the emotional bond is deeply rooted with their humans and they are truly loyal.
- Vocal Tendency: Don’t expect to have conversations with an American Curl cat. They tend to be on the quiet side with occasional trilling when communication is needed. Some people may enjoy that their sweet, soft meows are few and far between.
- Kids Compatible: American Curl cats absolutely love children as long as they know how to interact with these kitties. These tireless felines are perfect companions for your kids.
- Tolerates Pets: As long as your other pets are friendly, these cats should get along well with them. Always introduce a new cat slowly, especially when other pets are skittish.
- Stranger-Friendly: The answer is an unequivocal YES! This cat loves attention from all people whether they be close family members or complete strangers.
Health and Well-Being
Ideal Living Situation
Being a very active cat, the American Curl is best suited for a family with kids. This breed loves to play and run around well into adulthood, making it less likely to be compatible with a more sedentary lifestyle. Young, single people who are willing to maintain an energetic relationship with this cat would be the exception.
Possible Health Problems
The American Curl is typically a healthy cat and has no known diseases in its bloodlines however, there are a couple issues that can arise.
The first is Progessive Retinal Atrophy or PRA. This genetic disorder causes degeneration of the retina which can lead to progressive vision loss and even blindness.
The second problem has to do with the curled ear gene mutation. Because of the ear’s unique shape, it is possible for the cat to have narrow ear canals. This may result in frequent ear infections during its lifetime thanks to the trapped wax so, cleaning is necessary. The ears are also prone to weak cartilage and you will need to be very careful when touching them.
Annual Vaccinations
There are four core vaccines and one non-core option available for all cats.
The first essential vaccine would be Rabies which is a fatal disease if exposed to it.
The second inoculation (FVRCP) is a combination of the remaining three core vaccines in one. This covers Feline Herpesvirus 1 or FHV-1 which is an upper respiratory infection, Feline Calicivirus or FCV which attacks the upper respiratory tract, and the final is Feline Panleukopenia Virus or FPV (also known as Feline Distemper) which is life threatening and extremely dangerous for young cats and kittens.
You can get the optional non-core vaccine Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV. This is considered a core vaccine for every kitten. Make an appointment with your local vet to discuss and schedule all these vaccinations.
Grooming Routine
When caring for cats, there are four specific areas which need regular attention.
Weekly brushing is the minimum required to keep their fur healthy and shiny. This also helps distribute natural body oils, remove dead hair, and eliminate matted fur.
When the nails are getting a little too sharp and ripping furniture or carpet, it’s time to trim them. Be sure not to trim off too much of each nail as this can cause pain.
Cats are prone to periodontal disease and gingivitus so brushing their teeth with veterinarian-approved toothpaste once or twice a week should suffice. You can also give them dental treats to clean their teeth in between brushing.
Finally, you’ll want to address the ears. While cats have a built-in mechanism for cleansing their inner ear canals, the visible portion of their ears should occasionally be very gently swabbed to remove foreign matter.

Feeding Advice
Cats are known as obligate carnivores or strict meat eaters. Their diets should primarily consist of high protein and a few fats.
While carbohydrates are not usually a part of feline nutrition, scientists have concluded they are able to be used for energy in small amounts. On the other hand, if a cat is continuously fed too many carbs, diabetes can actually develop later in their life.
When choosing a wet or dry food, you need to read the caloric information labels to ensure your cat is being fed the appropriate nutrient levels.
Normally, wet foods should contain around 70% to 80% moisture as cats from past feral generations obtained most of their liquids from the animals they killed and ate.
Proteins are ideal when they’re between 10% and 20% in grain-free wet food. Seafood varieties are typically the highest in protein.
Two of the best dry food formulas on the market would be Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet with High Protein and Orijen Biologically Appropriate Cat Food. These specially made dry food products include healthy amounts of prepared raw meats, some needed fats, and minimal carbohydrates.
Exercise Tips
You should plan to play with your cat at least 15 minutes everyday, although, more is encouraged with certain active breeds.
Feather toys and laser pointers are a great choice to keep them moving. This helps relieve their boredom and reduces the chance for depression as well.
For a really cheap play session, simply buy a ball of string. Cut off a ten foot section at a time and drag it around the house behind you. Your kitties will love attacking the end of the string! Big fun for a small price.
Catnip is another way to offer an edible distraction in their lives. Don’t worry, the effects typically wear off in about 15 minutes or so.
One of the best items you can acquire for exercise would be a cat tree or cat condo. This is basically a jungle gym for cats which provides a place for climbing, relaxing, and sharpening their claws instead of using your furniture.
There are a couple other alternatives including an exercise wheel, which can be somewhat expensive, and a simple body harness with a leash for outdoor walks. Your cat may or may not like this option but, you can give it a try.

Those that are deemed household cats for non-breeding purposes will be in the lower cost range while kittens with prominent physical features, such as the curled ears, and possibly a champion lineage require substantially higher prices.
