The Abyssinian cat is truly an amazing breed. Their outgoing personality and playful nature make them a favorite among cat lovers.
Abyssinians are extremely intelligent and tend to learn very quickly. They are also somewhat dog-like, following their owners around the home and will actually play fetch.

Abyssinian Cat Facts
- The Abyssinian cat was named by ancient traders in Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) but the breed actually originated in Calcutta, India according to recent genetic testing.
- Legend has it that Abyssinian cats were known as the “Child of the Gods” to ancient Egyptians. They worshipped the cats and often portrayed them as sacred beings.
- Because of their incessant curiosity, eagerness to please, and playful antics, Abyssinians have been dubbed the “Clowns of the Cat Kingdom”.
- In 1978, Walt Disney Productions made a movie called “The Cat From Outer Space” starring an alien Abyssinian cat named Jake whose spaceship crash lands on Earth.
- Abyssinian cats were nearly wiped out in World War II. When Germany launched bombing missions on London, where the breed was being further developed, the lives of British citizens became the main priority. Luckily there were enough Abyssinians left to save them from total extinction and continue ongoing efforts to enhance the pedigree.
- Abyssinians have a few dog-like characteristics. They are very loyal and will follow you around. You can quickly teach them tricks like fetch and coming when called by name.

- Activity Level: Abyssinian cats are incredibly energetic! They are always in motion, which is partially driven by their endless curiosity. They are a whirlwind of activity… constantly running, jumping, and climbing on a daily basis.
- Breed Intellect: In Carolyn Osier’s definitive book “Abyssinian Breeders International Kitten Buyer’s Guide”, she proposes this breed is one of the most highly intelligent animals on earth. She backs up this statement explaining that their intense loyalty and focused initiative makes them truly easy to train, especially when properly rewarded.
- Temperament: Considered to be one of the friendliest cats, the Abyssinian will charm his or her way into your life. Words used to describe this breed are energetic, playful, loyal, athletic, affectionate, loving, curious, talkative, intelligent, and mischievous.
- Attention Needs: Being very social cats, Abyssinians love to interact with people and other animals. Those of you who have extended times away from home should avoid this breed as they can actually develop depression which will noticeably affect their normal behavior. It also helps to make sure they have plenty of toys and possibly other active cats or dogs in the home to keep them occupied when you’re not around.
- Caring Nature: While Abyssinians are not your typical lap kitty, they will follow you around and take every opportunity to cuddle up next to you on the couch or in bed. They enjoy your petting and scratching which usually result in amiable purring sessions.
- Vocal Tendency: If you’re looking for a talkative cat to have conversations with, the Abyssinian will satisfy your needs. With persistent meowing and feline murmurs throughout the day, you’ll never feel alone as you have a devoted companion.
- Kids Compatible: Because the Abyssinian is so active and energetic, you may want to supervise this kitty around any infants. Older children and teens are no problem as they know how to deal with the cat’s vigorous personality while providing needed attention.
- Tolerates Pets: Yes! The Aby is great with other cats and dogs as well. In fact, it is recommended to have other active pets in the home to help keep him or her occupied.
- Stranger-Friendly: This breed loves attention and will seek it out whenever possible so, go ahead and invite friends or family over whenever you like.
Health and Well-Being
Ideal Living Situation
Because the Abyssinian cat loves being the center of attention, this breed is most content with a devoted, caring family. Those people who are single must have patience and plenty of time to spend with their energetic friend.
The Aby can also adapt to any living environment, whether it’s a large home or small apartment.
A collection of toys, a cat tree, and a view out the window are definitely recommended. Other pets will help keep an Abyssinian occupied while you’re away from home as well.
Possible Health Problems
Periodontal Disease is common among Abyssinian cats but can be prevented with regular teeth brushing.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy unfortunately is hereditary eventually causing blindness and there is no cure.
Luxating Patella or a dislocated kneecap is only relieved in severe cases with surgery.
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency or PKD is another hereditary disease which is only treated by bone marrow transplantation.
Kidney Failure has no cure and can only take various steps to minimize the symptoms.
Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid which speeds up metabolism causing a lose in weight. Medication can relieve most or even all of the symptoms.
Annual Vaccinations
There are four core vaccines and one non-core option available for all cats.
The first essential vaccine would be Rabies which is a fatal disease if exposed to it.
The second inoculation (FVRCP) is a combination of the remaining three core vaccines in one. This covers Feline Herpesvirus 1 or FHV-1 which is an upper respiratory infection, Feline Calicivirus or FCV which attacks the upper respiratory tract, and the final is Feline Panleukopenia Virus or FPV (also known as Feline Distemper) which is life threatening and extremely dangerous for young cats and kittens.
You can get the optional non-core vaccine Feline Leukemia Virus or FeLV. This is considered a core vaccine for every kitten. Make an appointment with your local vet to discuss and schedule all these vaccinations.
Grooming Routine
When caring for cats, there are four specific areas which need regular attention.
Weekly brushing is the minimum required to keep their fur healthy and shiny. This also helps distribute natural body oils, remove dead hair, and eliminate matted fur.
When the nails are getting a little too sharp and ripping furniture or carpet, it’s time to trim them. Be sure not to trim off too much of each nail as this can cause pain.
Cats are prone to periodontal disease and gingivitus so brushing their teeth with veterinarian-approved toothpaste once or twice a week should suffice. You can also give them dental treats to clean their teeth in between brushing.
Finally, you’ll want to address the ears. While cats have a built-in mechanism for cleansing their inner ear canals, the visible portion of their ears should occasionally be very gently swabbed to remove foreign matter.

Feeding Advice
Cats are known as obligate carnivores or strict meat eaters. Their diets should primarily consist of high protein and a few fats.
While carbohydrates are not usually a part of feline nutrition, scientists have concluded they are able to be used for energy in small amounts. On the other hand, if a cat is continuously fed too many carbs, diabetes can actually develop later in their life.
When choosing a wet or dry food, you need to read the caloric information labels to ensure your cat is being fed the appropriate nutrient levels.
Normally, wet foods should contain around 70% to 80% moisture as cats from past feral generations obtained most of their liquids from the animals they killed and ate.
Proteins are ideal when they’re between 10% and 20% in grain-free wet food. Seafood varieties are typically the highest in protein.
Two of the best dry food formulas on the market would be Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet with High Protein and Orijen Biologically Appropriate Cat Food. These specially made dry food products include healthy amounts of prepared raw meats, some needed fats, and minimal carbohydrates.
Exercise Tips
You should plan to play with your cat at least 15 minutes everyday, although, more is encouraged with certain active breeds.
Feather toys and laser pointers are a great choice to keep them moving. This helps relieve their boredom and reduces the chance for depression as well.
For a really cheap play session, simply buy a ball of string. Cut off a ten foot section at a time and drag it around the house behind you. Your kitties will love attacking the end of the string! Big fun for a small price.
Catnip is another way to offer an edible distraction in their lives. Don’t worry, the effects typically wear off in about 15 minutes or so.
One of the best items you can acquire for exercise would be a cat tree or cat condo. This is basically a jungle gym for cats which provides a place for climbing, relaxing, and sharpening their claws instead of using your furniture.
There are a couple other alternatives including an exercise wheel, which can be somewhat expensive, and a simple body harness with a leash for outdoor walks. Your cat may or may not like this option but, you can give it a try.
Abyssinian Cat Price
The Abyssinian price can range from $700 to $1200 for those deemed as household pets and non-breeding purposes.
Registered, pedigreed kittens usually cost between $1200 and $2200.
Abyssinians with champion lineage are considerably higher priced starting at $2200 and going up to as much as $5000 depending on the breeder.
It’s possible to adopt an Abyssinian cat for charges around $30 to $175 however, these will likely be mixed breeds.
